Poutine

Did you know Canada.. of course we all know about our Canadian favourite Poutine but do you know its history?

The dish originated in rural Quebec, Canada, in the late 1950s. One tale often told is that of Fernand Lachance, from Warwick, Quebec, which claims that poutine was invented in 1957. Lachance is said to have exclaimed ça va faire une maudite poutine ("it will make a damn mess"), hence the name. The sauce was allegedly added later, to keep the fries warm longer.

Poutine used to be considered embarrassing to the local French-Canadian population as it was considered a low, rural food. Though now it's a dish many Canadians are proud of and enjoy introducing it to new comers.

The true way to build a poutine is fries, fresh white cheddar cheese curds and gravy - usually chicken gravy or a sauce brune which is a combination of beef and chicken stock, originating in Quebec.

Cheese curds were a staple in Quebec often sold right at the front of counter convenience stores in bags. They’re made fresh daily, and are meant to be kept at room temperature and eaten on the same day. These fresh cheese curds are best known for the squeaky sound they make when you bite into one.
