Newspapers

Did you know Canada.. Canada's first newspaper, John Bushell's Halifax Gazette, began publication in 1752. In 1917, Canadian newspapers banded together to form The Canadian Press, a news-gathering co-operative which ensured that stories at one end of the country would be available to papers at the other end.

Now there are about 100 daily newspapers published in Canada. In 2009, Canada’s daily paid circulation stood at 4.1 million copies on an average publishing day and 26.9 million copies in an average week.

The most widely read paper in our country is the Toronto Star. The second is Toronto-based national newspaper The Globe and Mail. The most widely read French-language newspaper is Le Journal de Montréal. As you probably know, unlike the United States, newspapers in Canada published their biggest and mostly widely read editions on Saturdays instead of Sundays.

It was interesting to read that it was The Halifax Daily News in 1994 that became Canada's first daily to launch an online edition on the Internet.

Do you read the newspaper daily? If so is it online or paper copy?
