Check your mail boxes Tuesday!

Did you know Canada.. Canada Post has initiated the process to resume operations following the passage of back to work legislation (Bill C-6). Employees will begin to report to work for their regularly scheduled shifts on Monday June 27 and on Tuesday June 28.

According to Canada Post..

Canadian consumers and businesses can expect to start receiving mail on Tuesday, June 28.

Post offices that were closed will start to reopen on Tuesday and resume regular operations.

All mailboxes will be unsealed starting on Monday and ready to receive mail as soon as possible.

Canada Post heading back to work!

Did you know Canada.. we are in luck! Just at 8pm on Saturday night The House gave third reading to the Canada Post back-to-work bill and by a vote of 158-113 it was passed. The house then adjourned for summer.

The Senate will receive the bill on Sunday morning and it should be a go for Canada Post back to work some time next week. In fact, according to Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, The back-to-work order would go into force 24 hours after receiving royal assent.

If you can believe this came to conclusion after a 58 hour filibuster! The Conservative government says the old record of non-stop debate was 27.5 hours which was set in 1989.

Canada Post/CUPW Talks Break Off

Did you know Canada.. the talks between Canada Post and the CUPW broke off Wednesday night. It is now up to our government to send Canada Post workers back to work and end the work stoppage.

As we mentioned before the government actually starts their summer break today but some good news - they say they will sit through the weekend if necessary to get the bill passed through government. It could be as early as today but as we mentioned before the NDP has previously said they would stall these proceedings. Now that talks have broken off the stalling may no longer be necessary though. Another road block may be that Friday is St. Jean Baptiste Day and the Liberals feel it is inappropriate to sit during this Quebec holiday.

Personally I'll be happy even with next week as long as it happens and the mail starts getting delivered again!

Social-Assistance cheques delivered today

Update: Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt introduced the bill to force an end to the work stoppage this afternoon. Unfortunately they only have a couple days to pass the bill before the Commons rises for the summer on Thursday.

Did you know Canada.. today is the day the social-assistance cheques are being delivered even though Canada Post is in a lock-out situation. It's over 9,000 letter carriers that are volunteering to provide this service to Canadians who depend on these cheques to live month-to-month.

There might be some more good news coming today as the government is expected to table back-to-work legislation that would force an end to the work stoppage. If passed, an arbitrator would settle the contract dispute with an agreement that would be binding on both sides.

Canada Post Strike June 15

Update with good news:  Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt has given 48 hours notice of her intention to introduce a bill to end Canada Post's lockout.

Did you know Canada.. we've woken up to some bad news today.. Following 12 days of increasingly costly rotating strikes by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Canada Post has suspended operations across the country.

The believe that a lockout is the best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider proposals that address declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit.

So just to reiterate: There will be no mail delivery across the country until the strike is resolved.

Canada Post Strike Update June 8

Did you know Canada.. Canada Post Strike is about to affect everyone.

Starting next week Canada Post will only be delivering Monday, Wednesday and Friday across Canada in urban areas.

According to Canada Post delivery of mail to rural mailboxes and community mailboxes will continue five days a week where service is provided by Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMCs) who operate under a separate collective agreement than urban employees.

Post Office operating hours and access to post office boxes will remain unchanged.

Most small packages and documents will also be delivered three days a week. Every effort will be made to continue to deliver priority items five days a week.

Canada Post Strike Update June 6

Did you know Canada.. some more news from the Canada Post Strike. While Montreal ends their 1 day strike at 11:30pm The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says its Moncton and Victoria locals will begin 24-hour strikes in both cities at midnight tonight.

They are also saying that after careful consideration, Canada Post has again turned down an offer put forward by CUPW as part of labour negotiations.

The reason for the rejection they say is that the union’s latest offer does not offer realistic solutions to problems such as declining mail volumes, increasing competition, and electronic substitutions of traditional mail.

So at this point it's not looking good for the strike being resolved quickly as both sides continue to disagree.

Where the Canada Post Strike is heading next

Did you know Canada.. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says it's Montreal local that will begin a 24-hour strike at 11:30 p.m. tonight while Hamilton ends their strike tonight.

In the meantime, Canada Post’s negotiating team is reviewing the latest offer put forward by CUPW and is seeking clarity on several points proposed by the union.

Canada Post says it is looking for CUPW to propose realistic solutions to problems such as declining mail volumes, increasing competition, and electronic substitutions of traditional mail.

Canada Post Strike Update June 2

Did you know Canada.. according to this article in thestar and cupw.ca Canada Post is starting with rotating strikes. This means you may still get mail tomorrow!

If no agreement is reached by 11:59pm tonight it's Winnipeg local that will be on strike first for 24 hours, moving to other cities to be announced later.

As posted by the CUPW..

The purpose of this strike activity is to encourage Canada Post Corporation to abandon their proposals for significant concessions and instead negotiate solutions to the very real problems that are being experienced by 48,000 postal workers.

Winnipeg has been chosen as the location for the first strike activity because it was the first city to be impacted by Canada Post's modernization program. The results have been a sharp deterioration of service to the public as well as a host of health and safety problems experienced by postal workers due to the new work methods and equipment.

CUPW has negotiations demands designed to resolve these problems and we want Canada Post to address them.

Canada Post Strike Update May 30

Did you know Canada.. it looks like the strike is a GO.

Canada Post received notice that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) intends to begin strike activities at 11:59 p.m. EDT on June 2, 2011.

In the event of a strike, Canada Post will not operate. Mail and parcels will not be delivered. Though as we mentioned before there are some plans in place to get folks their social assistance checks.

Canada Post says despite this development, talks between the company and union are continuing in an effort to reach a negotiated settlement to this round of labour negotiations. There have been last minute agreements in the past.

Let's hope they really are continuing to work towards an agreement before the strike.

CUPW Denies Rumours of a Strike Notice coming down the pipe for Friday May 27th. They claim business as usual while labour negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW continue.

Work Absences

Did you know Canada.. Stats Canada did a really interesting study on work absences. They found in an average week in 2010, 8.0% of full-time employees in Canada missed some work for personal reasons.

Women lost 11.0 days compared with 7.6 days for men. Full-time workers with preschool-age children lost 3.1 days for personal or family responsibilities compared with 1.4 days for those in families without children.

I definitely can see the number being higher for those with preschool-age children, between doctors appointments, random illnesses with kids and more I know everyday is a challenge for parents to get to work.

Stats Canada also found that at the industry level, full-time employees who missed the most work days on average were those in health care and social assistance (13.4 days) and public administration (11.8 days). The lowest averages were recorded by those in professional, scientific and technical services (5.4 days) and primary industries (7.0 days).

Do you find these numbers high?? When I worked in the office full time I always felt guilty about calling in sick no matter how sick I was, I know others make sure they get in all their allotted sick days every year whether they are really sick or not.

Canada Post Strike Update May 24

Did you know Canada.. Mail continues until at least this Friday.

Canada Post will continue to work until at least May 27, as the CUPW has not issued a mandatory 72-hour strike notice yet.

CUPW is waiting for a response on their recent global offer submitted on May 22rd.

Canada Post Update for May 23

Did you know Canada.. We may luck out in the Canada Post strike yet!

Canada Post insisted today in a statement that there will be no postal strike in Canada on Wednesday, as negotiations with the CUPW continued through the weekend and into this week.

The union sent an updated set of demands to the Crown Corporation on Sunday, after Canada Post had set out its final offer for a new four-year collective bargaining agreement on Thursday.

The CUPW said its new comprehensive offer continues to oppose Canada Post’s proposals to reform sick leave entitlement as well as rejecting a 22% cut in starting salaries for future employees.

Anti-fog Glasses

Did you know Canada..  Quebec City's Université Laval have developed what they claim is the world's first permanent anti-fog coating.

Université Laval offers close to 400 academic programs in 17 faculties and 235 research Centres, Chairs and Institutes. It is classified as a Medical-Doctoral university for its medical school and extensive graduate population and is the home of North America’s only francophone faculties of Agriculture and Food Sciences, and of Forestry and Geomatics.

They're saying just one application is said to work indefinitely on eyeglasses, windshields, camera lenses, or any other transparent glass or plastic surface.  The permanent anti-fog coating uses polyvinyl alcohol that won't wear off overtime like other anti-fog products on the market.

Canadians spend the most time online

Did you know Canada.. according to a new study by comScore Inc. and being reported by many news sources - Canadians spend more time online than any other country.

ComScore reports around 68 per cent of Canadians routinely access the net compared to 62 per cent in France to just 59 per cent of Americans. So with an average of 43.5 hours per month, the new study finds nobody spends more time online than Canadians.

What's everybody doing? Well according to Google in Canada, YouTube per capita consumption of video is No. 1 in the world! Also, around 51 per cent of Canadians have Facebook accounts. While Twitter is not quite as popular Canadian female Twitter users are more active than male Twitter users. Canadians also love Wikipedia - the average Canadian reading 16 pages a month, which is the most in the world. We also love our eReaders supporting Canadian company - Kobo.

I know when I worked in the office full time I was NEVER late for work, even if that meant skipping my morning coffee and running in from the parking lot. Many co workers were often late for work though, coffee in hand, strolling along but that's just not in me to do. I am the one that always shows up early or on time, I hate to inconvenience people because I know I absolutely hate waiting around for people that say they will show up at a certain time. And this is your job! I feel like people that do this think their time is more important than yours and that is not okay.

Now that I have kids I can see the occasional late day because the bus didn't show up on time or someone wasn't feeling well, but there's a big difference between kiddos and some of the crazy excuses in the article.
